Maloya-Events in Paris

Maloya is a traditional musical genre from Réunion Island, originating from the chants and rhythms of enslaved people of African and Malagasy descent. It is defined by a complex ternary 6/8 rhythmic foundation driven by traditional percussion instruments like the kayamb rattle, the roulér drum, and the bobre musical bow. Characterized by a call-and-response vocal structure and themes of social protest, the genre maintains a raw, hypnotic intensity that is both celebratory and deeply melancholic. While sharing cultural roots with the commercialized Séga, Maloya remains a potent symbol of local identity and is recognized by UNESCO for its intangible cultural heritage.
