Baroque-Events in Rotterdam

Emerging in Europe between 1600 and 1750, Baroque music succeeded the Renaissance and established the foundations of the Common Practice Era. It is defined by the use of basso continuo, complex counterpoint, and ornate melodic embellishments performed on period instruments like the harpsichord, pipe organ, and lute. Rhythmically, the genre often employs a persistent, motoric pulse, while its emotional character varies from somber religious devotion to grandiose, festive exuberance through the use of terraced dynamics. As a precursor to the Classical period, Baroque music transitioned from modal to tonal harmony, profoundly influencing the structural development of operas, concertos, and sonatas through its innovative emphasis on dramatic contrast and virtuosity.
