Gospel-Events in Rotterdam

Gospel music is a foundational African American religious genre that emerged in the early 17th century, evolving from a fusion of spirituals, hymns, and sacred songs. Its characteristic instrumentation relies heavily on the Hammond B3 organ, piano, and rhythmic percussion, underpinned by powerful, emotive choral arrangements and virtuosic lead vocals. The genre is defined by its syncopated rhythms and call-and-response structures, often oscillating between slow, soul-stirring ballads and high-tempo, celebratory shout music. Emotionally, it conveys a profound sense of hope and spiritual catharsis, serving as the harmonic and rhythmic precursor to modern soul, R&B, and rock and roll while maintaining a distinct focus on religious devotion and community resilience.
