Minimal Synth-Events in Rotterdam

Minimal synth emerged in the late 1970s and early 1980s as a DIY offshoot of post-punk and electronic music, primarily utilizing affordable analog synthesizers and primitive drum machines for home recording. The genre is characterized by its sparse, skeletal arrangements, mechanical rhythms, and a cold, detached emotional atmosphere that frequently reflects urban alienation and futurist themes. Often featuring repetitive melodic loops and basic sequencing, it maintains a distinctive lo-fi aesthetic that differentiates it from the polished production and bright textures of mainstream synth-pop. It shares a strong semantic lineage with coldwave and industrial music while focusing on minimalist song structures and raw, unadorned electronic textures that emphasize simplicity over complexity.
