Pansori-Events in Rotterdam

Pansori is a traditional Korean genre of musical storytelling that originated in the 17th century during the Joseon Dynasty, evolving from shamanistic rituals into a sophisticated folk art. The performance features a solo vocalist, known as a sorikkun, accompanied exclusively by a single gosu player who provides rhythmic structure and verbal encouragement using a buk barrel drum. These narratives utilize complex rhythmic cycles called jangdan and stylized vocal timbres to convey a wide spectrum of human emotions, ranging from deep sorrow to satirical humor. As a foundational pillar of Korean cultural heritage, Pansori is semantically linked to other folk traditions like Minyo but remains distinct through its unique combination of epic narrative and virtuosic operatic delivery.
