Sound Art-Events in Rotterdam

Sound art is an interdisciplinary creative practice that emerged from early 20th-century avant-garde movements like Futurism and Dadaism, prioritizing sound as a primary artistic medium rather than a musical structure. It utilizes a vast array of instrumentation including field recordings, electronic synthesizers, acoustic sculptures, and site-specific installations to explore spatial and conceptual auditory experiences. The rhythm is typically non-metric or irregular, often eschewing traditional tempo in favor of atmospheric textures or silence, resulting in moods that range from deeply meditative to intellectually challenging. Semantically, it bridges the gap between experimental music and the visual arts, sharing significant characteristics with musique concrète, electroacoustic composition, and contemporary performance art.
