Timba-Events in Rotterdam

Timba emerged in Cuba during the late 1980s as a sophisticated evolution of traditional son montuno and songo, integrating elements of funk, R&B, and jazz. This high-energy genre utilizes a standard salsa ensemble of brass and percussion but incorporates drum kits and synthesizers to create complex, aggressive polyrhythms and intricate piano tumbaos. Characterized by its urban, street-oriented mood and lyrical focus on daily life, the music emphasizes the 'despelote' section where the rhythm becomes exceptionally intense for dancers. While semantically linked to salsa, Timba distinguishes itself through its more intricate arrangements and contemporary hip-hop influences, serving as a definitive modern expression of Cuban dance music.
