Wassoulou-Events in Rotterdam

Wassoulou is a vibrant musical genre originating from the Wassoulou region in West Africa, spanning parts of Mali, Guinea, and the Ivory Coast. Rooted in the ancient hunting traditions of the Mandé people, it is traditionally performed by women who use the music to address social issues like polygamy and fertility. The sound is characterized by a distinctive pentatonic scale and the rhythmic drive of the kamale ngoni, a six-stringed youth harp, accompanied by the metallic pulse of the karinyan scraper. Its soulful, earthy mood differentiates it from the more courtly, heptatonic griot traditions, blending ancestral acoustic textures with modern polyphonic arrangements to create a powerful, danceable bridge between rural folk and urban pop.
