Hammond Organ-Events in Utrecht

The Hammond organ genre encompasses a soulful blend of jazz, blues, and gospel centered around the distinctive, percussive sound of the tonewheel organ and its rotating Leslie speaker. Emerging in the mid-20th century as a portable alternative to pipe organs, it became synonymous with the organ trio format, typically featuring a guitar or saxophone alongside drums. The music is characterized by syncopated shuffle rhythms, walking bass lines performed on foot pedals, and a warm, harmonically rich timbre that ranges from smooth purrs to gritty, overdriven growls. This style serves as a vital bridge between traditional liturgical music and secular soul-jazz, exerting a profound influence on the development of rock and roll and modern funk.
