Qawwali-Events in Utrecht

Qawwali is a profound form of Sufi devotional music originating from the Indian subcontinent over seven hundred years ago, primarily associated with the shrines of Sufi saints. Characterized by its lead vocalists, chorus, and instrumentation featuring the harmonium, tabla, and rhythmic hand-clapping, it often begins with a slow, meditative tempo that gradually intensifies into a vigorous, ecstatic crescendo. The genre seeks to induce a state of spiritual enlightenment through repetitive, rhythmic poetry, bridging the gap between sacred Islamic mysticism and Hindustani classical traditions. Historically performed at "sama" gatherings, it has evolved from a ritualistic practice into a globally recognized genre of spiritual expression and world music.
