Afrobeat-Events in Zurich

Afrobeat emerged in the late 1960s within Nigeria and Ghana as a revolutionary fusion crafted primarily by Fela Kuti and drummer Tony Allen. The genre blends traditional West African highlife and Yoruba music with American funk and jazz, characterized by complex polyrhythmic patterns and extended, hypnotic instrumental sections. Typically featuring large horn sections, rhythmic electric guitars, and dense percussion, the music maintains an energetic yet disciplined tempo that encourages both dancing and political reflection. This stylistic hybrid serves as a precursor to modern Afropop while remaining distinct through its long-form compositions and improvisational jazz-like structures, creating a powerful, groove-centric atmosphere that remains globally influential, enduring, and culturally significant.
