Iskelma-Events in Zurich

Iskelmä is a foundational genre of Finnish popular music that emerged in the early 20th century, heavily influenced by German Schlager and Russian melancholic romances. Traditionally, it features acoustic instrumentation such as accordions, violins, and double bass, though modern iterations frequently incorporate synthesizers and polished pop production techniques. The rhythm typically adheres to steady dance meters like the tango, waltz, or humppa, maintaining a moderate tempo that supports its characteristic blend of sentimental nostalgia and accessible, melodic catchiness. Functioning as the Finnish equivalent of mainstream pop-schlager, it occupies a unique cultural space that bridges traditional ballroom traditions with contemporary radio-friendly songwriting.
