Memphis Hip Hop-Events in Zurich

Originating in the early 1990s in Memphis, Tennessee, Memphis hip hop is a distinct subgenre characterized by its eerie, lo-fi production and heavy use of the Roland TR-808 drum machine. The sound typically features dark, cinematic synth pads, hypnotic basslines, and repetitive vocal loops that create a claustrophobic and often menacing atmosphere. Rhythmically, it is defined by a slow-to-mid tempo paired with aggressive, double-time or triple-time lyrical deliveries, bridging the gap between southern bounce and horrorcore. This style served as a foundational blueprint for modern trap music and phonk, maintaining a gritty, underground aesthetic that prioritizes raw energy and occult-themed imagery over polished mainstream production standards.
