Ragga-Events in Zurich

Ragga, short for raggamuffin, emerged in Jamaica during the mid-1980s as a digitally-driven evolution of dancehall music characterized by its reliance on synthesized instrumentation rather than live bands. The genre's sonic identity was famously defined by the "Sleng Teng" riddim, utilizing electronic keyboards and drum machines to create fast, syncopated rhythms that support aggressive, rhythmic vocal delivery. It maintains a high-energy, street-oriented mood, often blending elements of reggae with hip-hop sensibilities to foster a rebellious and dance-centric atmosphere. As a crucial precursor to jungle and modern electronic dance music, ragga represents the transition from acoustic roots towards a fully computerized production aesthetic within the Caribbean diaspora.
