Sevdah-Events dieses Wochenende in Zurich

Originating in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the Ottoman period, Sevdah is a traditional urban folk genre characterized by profound emotional depth and melodic complexity. Historically accompanied by the long-necked saz, modern arrangements frequently feature the accordion, violin, and nylon-string guitar to support melismatic vocal performances. The music typically utilizes slow to moderate tempos with a flexible approach to rhythm, evoking a specific state of melancholic longing and unrequited love known as "sevdah." Philosophically and structurally akin to genres like Portuguese fado or Greek rebetiko, it serves as a sophisticated expression of cultural identity that bridges Balkan folk traditions with Near Eastern harmonic influences.
