Turkish Classical-Events heute Abend in Zurich

Turkish Classical Music emerged from the Ottoman imperial court, synthesizing Byzantine, Persian, and Arabic traditions into a highly sophisticated modal system known as makam. The genre relies on a diverse ensemble typically featuring the ney flute, oud, tanbur, and kanun, which navigate complex microtonal scales and rhythmic cycles called usul. Its character is profoundly elegant and often contemplative, ranging from spiritual vocal improvisations to structured instrumental suites. While distinct from the rustic nature of Turkish folk music, it shares a common ancestor with the broader Middle Eastern maqam tradition, representing the pinnacle of Turkey's urban and aristocratic musical heritage.
