Wake up, a new Korean saying to emotionally devastate has dropped
Bedford Park makes ordinary places feel heavy with history. After her mother’s car accident, Audrey returns to her parents’ New Jersey home. The dispute over the damage brings her into Eli’s life, and their tense first encounters gradually give way to rides, meals and conversations neither seems used to having. The connection between Audrey and Eli gives the film its emotional center. Both carry a deep sense of hurt and isolation, and the love that grows between them offers a chance to feel understood.Ahn grounds their struggles in the Korean American experience, while showing how differently Audrey and Eli relate to their heritage and family expectations. There’s a lot going on around them. Audrey’s fertility struggles, her father’s alcoholism, her parents’ expectations and Eli’s painful ties to his adoptive family all touch on childhood trauma, identity, family obligation and belonging. At times, these threads crowd one another, and the film feels like it’s reaching beyond its grasp.Stephanie Ahn directs with real sensitivity, drawing strong performances and a vivid sense of place. This is a very strong directorial debut, so bleak, yet still so hopeful.2026 RankedFilm Independent Spirit Awards 2027Queer Cinema Ranked
BEDFORD PARK is a delicate, intimate, and heartfelt directorial debut that showcases the quiet confidence of writer-director Stephanie Ahn. Though it runs a bit long and occasionally meanders, there’s something deeply warm and charming about watching these two characters’ relationship grow after a chance meeting and being so opposed to the other. Haunted by their pasts as children of immigrant parents, they carry guilt, anger, and “han” into adulthood, searching for healing but not knowing where to find it. Moon Choi and Son Suk-ku share such natural, beautiful chemistry that it manages to overcomes the film’s shortcomings. Their connection gently builds into something tender and meaningful, making this a film that hits you softly but firmly in the feels.
