The mystery beyond death is the central theme of The Black Pit of Dr M. This atmospheric Mexican horror film focuses on a pact between two doctors; the first to die will find a way to return and show the other what waits behind death's door. The style of the film was clearly influenced by the likes of German Expressionism and Universal Horror. Director Fernando Méndez makes grand use of light and shadow along with fog, creaking doors and a thundering foreboding score to give the film a real ominous ambiance. The narrative features a number of subplots which at first seem superfluous to the main theme, but eventually coalesce around the central thrust - delivering a story that would seem contrived if it wasn't so wonderfully shrouded in the mysteries beyond the mortal coil! The film does well to keep the title character on the right side of sympathetic. He's curious but not a bad guy really, and this nicely stirs in an element of tragedy when he ultimately gets his comeuppance for daring to peek into the ultimate unknown. The Black Pit of Dr M is a real satisfying slice of horror. Some great horror ideas well used and atmosphere in spades. Great stuff.
Zwei Ärzte schwören einen Pakt, dass der erste, der stirbt, zurückkehren wird, um zu enthüllen, wie man einen Blick ins Jenseits wirft, während man noch am Leben ist.
