So yeah, apparently in another life, my man K. Kurosawa wasn't only making non-slow cinema but actually offbeat pinku (?) with plenty of humor. Granted, not much of the comedy was for me, but it’s certainly amusing. And unpredictable. I wasn’t expecting any of those fart sex scenes. The cinematography is incredible, and the staging work is really good too. I love the way he blocks every scene and places its actors, sometimes for some good comedic purposes. All the actors are in for the game, and they deliver on the absurdity. Much of the deadpan stuff contrasts very well with some of the over-the-top stuff. The Excitement of the Do-Re-Mi-Fa Girl (or "Bumpkin Soup") is a delightful surprise of a blind watch!This cleverly-borderline pinku flick was rejected (literally!) by Nikkatsu's Roman Porno division given that it's a hella absurdist, satirical as fuck comedy that flouts pinku genre expectations. A country bumpkin (Akiko) visits a Tokyo college in hopes of tracking down the boy she wants to marry and ends up wandering into an unending circus world of aimless and horny students, a college professor obsessed with fleshing out his "the concept of shame is a sham" theory, bizarre experiments, amusing musical numbers, and ridiculous performance art. And it's all gloriously hilarious! While flagrantly offbeat and "pleasantly incoherent," I still found at least some hidden meaning radiating from all of the nonsensical antics that spoofs erotica, college life, and zealous students ostensibly seeking to revolutionize…something? 😂It loses a bit of steam towards the end when shit unexpectedly "gets real," but man, everything that came before it was an absolute riot.I love this movie but I can easily see how/why it wouldn't work for others, so be warned that your mileage may vary.Kiyoshi Kurosawa's work is the definition of "hit or miss" for me. I've legit disliked damn near half of the now 25 movies that I've seen from him. Kiyoshi Kurosawa second feature and first studio assignment, an almost pinku, almost musical Godardian anthropological study on dissafected Japanese youth around 1985. The mix of sorrow and playfulness is very rewarding if one decides to accept the film's very odd rhythms. Its many detours never cohere, but the feelings remain strong and Yoriko Doguchi is great.
