November 2021: 26 königliche Schätze aus Dahomey werden Paris verlassen, um in ihr Ursprungsland, Benin, zurückgebracht zu werden. Doch wie sollte man mit der Rückkehr dieser Vorfahren in einem Land leben, das sich erst aufbauen und mit ihrer Abwesenheit zurechtkommen musste? Während die Seele der Werke freigesetzt wird, tobt unter den Studenten der Universität Abomey Calavi eine Debatte.

loved that this was a doc more focused on storytelling than information. personifies the artefacts returning to benin like a child of diaspora coming back to their home country with the feelings and disconcertment that has.it also highlights a lot of beninian perspectives on what’s happening but doesn’t really tell u to pick a side or even have context, u just have to listen which i highly appreciate

a classic Forum section film - petite, low budget, political. expectably Mati Diop using the hype of the moment (after winning a major award in Cannes) to get a side project like this into a spotlight through the Berlinale - chronically lacking big names - competition slot. no way Cannes would have given this to her, the film is simply too small. Berlin got her name likely only by offering her this major platform. festival politics aside Diop uses two enhancements to freshen up a rather plain documentary aesthetically: she looked for a fitting ambient score to underline her images into a dream like float, skillfully arranged yet this is more of a successful result of a meticulous search. and she uses a narrative trick, let one of the sculptures tell the enigmatic, mythological, intellectually surplus voice over. a tactic she got from the aesthetics from contemporary art school short films, similarly like competition's companion piece Pepe used it. besides that the film is divided into two parts: the detailed look into how a very small amount of national treasures are given back from France to Benin, and the following debate of young Beninese how to classify that act - a start? only symbolic politics? an insult?Dahomey is an fruitful piece of postcolonial cinema. one that - in its aesthetical limitations - you will surely soon find in the arte mediathek, but one that should not have been put into a top 3 festival arthouse competition.
