I’m truly blown away. I can only say that Manny Liotta has created what is, for me, one of the best films of the year. This year in film has been rather disappointing so far, though that’s just my perspective. Unfortunately, many films failed to live up to my expectations, but I knew that Facetape wouldn't let me down. Facetape feels like a mix of Requiem for a Dream, Inland Empire, Videodrome, Milk & Serial, and Backrooms, combined with elements from various experimental shorts, both by Liotta himself and by Japanese directors who shaped the avant-garde and experimental genres. And I mean that with the utmost admiration, it’s not as if the film simply ripped anything off. Everything feels fresh and original, yet while watching, you still get the sense that you’re in a world that feels strangely familiar. At 84 minutes, it’s relatively short, but it leaves a lasting impression that stays with you. There are many highlights, but the editing really stood out to me. I definitely want to see more from the Manny Liotta × Cody Steele duo in the future. Facetape is a psychedelic trip that mirrors reality, despite the distorted scenes, it feels more real than you might expect. People in real life live in their own worlds, worlds often surrounded by addictions that are incredibly hard to break free from. That sense of truthfulness was captured exceptionally well in Facetape. I also really loved the film's opening 15 minutes, where Manny Liotta expressed his love for cinema through Sonny’s long monologue. The film takes a wild, trippy turn, at times it felt like things were getting a bit too crazy, but personally, I really enjoyed that. The ending was another major highlight for me, it really turns the film on its head in a great way. In terms of acting, Cody Steele really impressed me, though he had already demonstrated his acting skills in Manny Liotta’s Glossy Nights. The other performances were solid too. Anyway, I’m glad Manny Liotta gave me the unique opportunity to watch and review this film in advance. That’s really not something to be taken for granted, thanks a lot, Manny. Sending love. Believe me, I’ll be rewatching this film very soon. Guys, if you get the chance to watch this film when it’s officially released, give it a shot. The influences of Liotta bounced off the silver screen through a kaleidoscope that reminded me of why I share movies with others. A love letter to the creation of something bigger than us, something worth obsessing over. Videodrome, Inland Empire, and Strange Days could all be mentioned here as influences, rightfully so. But it’s Liotta’s love for cinema that cuts through the veil of reality that shook me up last night and reminded me of why art is so important.
