Roger Corman's final directorial effort - a big-budget (by Corman standards), tonally all-over-the-place studio assignment (!) with an overqualified cast and crew. But judging from the unimaginative style and thin story, I don’t think the director’s heart was really in this one.John Hurt stars as a scientist from the mid-21st century who accidentally creates a time-warp that sends him to 19th century Switzerland. He seems remarkably nonplussed about this traumatic situation, driving his futuristic car around the countryside and showing his electric watch to the confused locals. One of them is Dr. Frankenstein (Raul Julia, the MVP), who it turns out is a real guy that Mary Godwin (Bridget Fonda) knew. After a midsection where Hurt putters around the countryside and gets laid by the future Mrs. Shelley ("Percy and Byron preach free love. I practice it."), it's a manno a manno brawl between him and the Frankenstein Monster that crosses space and time.Hardly Roger's finest hour, but watchable cheese. Given the choice, I would have preferred to see him direct a few more things like this in the '90s rather than producing scores of movies like, for example, In the Heat of Passion II: Unfaithful (1994) or Body Chemistry 4: Full Exposure (1995). Full disclosure, I haven't actually seen those movies, I just picked them at random. Maybe they're great, who knows? The poster isn't lying. The Monster's eyes really are stitched together in this movie.Watched on VHS.
Action!-The March of the (3) Rogers: B Is For CormanAnd so we come to the end of our month-long marathon, which turned out to be less taxing than I had anticipated. And, as always, I hope you had a fantastic time and discovered a good film or two.Unfortunately, I would not classify the last picture directed by Roger Corman, who had returned from an almost two-decade hiatus, as a "good film." And, to be honest, I believe it should have remained that wayand he should have continue as a producer.Don't get me wrong: the film is far from a mitigated disaster. The concept of time travel and redefining the literary and historical history of Frankenstein and Mary Shelley is interesting and went into some interesting places. Raul Julia and John Hurt were also good, although the material they were given was just a little below their abilities. And the conclusion was both unduly long and illogical. All in all, if the idea of Frankenstein and time travel appeals to you, you might enjoy this one. Again, it's not a good film by any stretch of the imagination.TODAY SCHEDULEVon Richthofen and BrownFrankenstein UnboundChildren of Huang ShiBetter Day
