Vor Japans Küste werden Boote von einem gigantischen Monster angegriffen und versenkt. Die Einwohner der Odo-Insel nennen es Godzilla. Der Wissenschaftler Dr. Yamane vermutet, dass es sich um einen 50 m großen Dinosaurier aus der Jura-Periode handelt, dass durch Atombomben aufgeschreckt wurde und nun sein Unwesen treibt. Godzilla legt Tokio in Schutt und Asche, das Militär kann das Monster nicht aufhalten. Dr. Serizawa hat eine todbringende Erfindung gemacht, doch er hat Angst, diese einzusetzen. Erst als er sieht, was Godzilla angerichtet hat, kann seine Freundin Emiko ihn überzeugen seine Waffe einzusetzen.

"For those watching at home, this is no play or movie!" One of cinema's all-time great analog technical achievements, a film that can't help but be read as a kind of psychic national catharsis. There were even two or three effects shots that, at least in my weirdo brain, resembled nothing so much as 9/11 footage. There's a scene in this where the politicians sit around and argue about whether or not the country brought this on itself.
