Pleasantly surprised by Blanche Mehaffey in HELD FOR RANSOM (1938)! She's got real derring-do — out in the boondocks hunting down the crooks on her own, no man by her side until the very end. Love the bit where she and her partner jump in a car to save a guy from a burning building — SHE'S the one who takes the wheel and floors it! Too bad her character wasn't serialized as planned (was supposed to be the first of six).
Mediocre cheapy thriller with a handful of cool scenes.
Two stars not because it was bad (it wasn't) but because there was so little going on there wasn't that *much* to rate. A pretty standard crime investigation but with very little clarity on who was "good" and who was "bad" other than the female investigator (at least until the tie-it-up-in-a-neat-bow end). I haven't seen many B movies, especially older B movies, so it was a treat from that perspective.
