I know... I know... you’d think Hell Spa would be great because that title rules, but it just didn’t work for me :(I’ll try you again one day Hell Spa... I’m certain we’ll click better then, especially for my next Spa-ploitation day, but in the meantime...:: slowly caresses Death Spa Blu-ray while apologizing for such an egregious betrayal of spa choices::
"You're right. It was a bad idea." What in the absolute fuck is this thing? Satanic spa mafia knocking off co-eds? Fuck yeah they are! Pretty bat shit nuts actually. The soundtrack is stretched leather and everything is tense and exaggerated. Energy. Quality late night stoner jam for when you want something awkward. "There's something out there and it took my beans." Fuck yeah it did!
The second film of our "Budget Slagers" SOV movie party.Carlo shuffled the movie picks so we had no idea what we’d get when the films started. This SOV flick began promisingly with the title "Hell Spa" and immediately launched into a slasher-style setup featuring a girl being chased by a hat-wearing killer dressed in black. Her head gets crushed. After that, the movie slowly turned into an endurance test.The killer turns out to be a Faustian soul collector named Mr. Ex (Tim Abell), who sets his sights on making a soul-snatching deal with a nearby gym in exchange for youth, power, and wealth. He receives his orders from a computer mainframe (Packard Hell), and we’re subjected to lots, and I mean LOTS, of filler scenes involving characters from a game programming company (at least I think that’s what they are) and people "training" in the gym. Mr. Ex also delivers endless theatrical monologues. No wonder one of the characters is named Shakespeare.Although both IMDb and Letterboxd list the runtime as 90 minutes, this film started to feel like three hours once it began losing all four of us. I asked Carlo to check how much was left, and he jokingly said, "Half an hour," expecting it to be shorter. When he clicked the info button and we saw there were still 40 minutes to go, we burst out laughing hysterically (while audibly suffering). It was honestly the most fun we had during the entire film. This thing is an excruciating 110 minutes long!By the time it finally ended, we were all drained and done for the night. There are a few decent death scenes scattered throughout, but they’re so rare and far apart that the sluggish pacing completely outweighs them.This felt like six hours. Just check out "Death Spa (1988)" or "Killer Workout (1987)" instead. Much more fun!
