my mom: go to churchme: i've just watched an isabelle huppert movie
i had this on my watchlist for quite a while now and assumed it’d be lower-tier isabelle huppert vehicle...but i’m kinda blown away by it. it’s a drama about a family unit that’s not totally wacky but kind of unconventional, and a problem that is a way bigger deal than initially seems. great microcosmic look at how some people are negatively affected by what is unanimously considered a convenience to society (here, a highway built right next to this family’s once-isolated property, talked about on the radio daily as a massive success) - and we see those changes take shape in every family member in their own unique way, from the malleable youngest brother to the paranoid genius sister, the flighty oldest sis, the reactive father, and the mother (huppert), who we’re led to believe made a lot more sacrifices than shown on screen.
Just because we built a house here, doesn’t make it a home. What even is home anyway? To you, it’s the one place in the world where you know how to be yourself. Where no-one can see fit to stick their noses in. Tell you how to live your life. To Mum, it’s a refuge, the escape vessel away from the noise and constant commotion. A safe spot. A haven. A place where she’s boss to boot. To our little bro, Julien, it is the world. The one and only nesting spot that he’s ever known so far. The dwelling place of every memory and the apex of absolute possibility. Beyond that door… let’s put it this way. What he doesn’t know, it won’t concern him.To Dad, home equals anywhere with a roof over our heads and four walls to call our own. It’s the bricks and the mortar plus the DNA they’ve come to be part and parcel of. We are our home, and vice versa, in Dad’s two, concrete-filled eyes. And to me? Well, it stands for the beginning. A marker to look back upon when everything has begun to fall into place. My home is somewhere to come back to with open arms when life has started to run its course. A distant memory one day maybe, but the sprint to my marathon nonetheless. Home may be where you make it, but that doesn’t make it the place I choose to stay.Tell me, then. What happens to that same home. The day they decide to take all of this away?
