As far as old Hollywood biopics go, this is one of the very best. Halle Berry is sensational as Dorothy Dandridge, it’s one of the best performances of her career, she becomes Dorothy so much that you’re mistaken for thinking it’s the actual Dorothy, truly a chameleonic performance. It has quite a lot of sad moments, Dorothy’s life was one filled with sadness and tragedy, and it’s shown with a no holds barred approach in this film. What’s interesting is that Dorothy Dandridge was the first black actress to be nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award, and it took so many years later for a black actress to actually win, and it was Halle Berry who won. Halle is so beautiful, so so so so beautiful, however, her beauty is no match for her acting talent, it’s so apt that she played Dandridge.Would make a great double-feature with The Josephine Baker Story, which I also watched recently. I recommend checking both films out.
Who wants some chitlins?I wanted to watch something good on my birthday, so I chose this! I loved Dorothy Dandridge in Carmen Jones, so I had high hopes. This did not disappoint. 1999 Halle Berry plays Dandridge and Martha Coolidge directs. This is perhaps the best thing either one of them has done. I didn’t know Dandridge was married to Harold Nicholas. Because the National Film Registry declared the Nicholas Brothers home movies to be important, I watch these without knowing the background of the couple. Both her first and second husbands treated her horribly and it was awful to watch it!I had heard that Dandridge overdosed, but it turns out that it was more complicated than that. I especially enjoyed the musical numbers and the family drama which felt incredibly real. I also didn’t know about her affair with Otto Preminger! OMG! This woman was strong and inspiring. I love stuff like this!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️Vegan alert:Chitlins reference.
