girls are so strong and i love them for that

The Virgin Suicides: who are youMustang: I’m you but stronger
it is so weird to me to see that people liked it so much. i think the director (despite being turkish) is as unfamiliar to turkish culture as her actors/actresses and the people who are praising the movie so highly here are. this really comes off as orientalist in a way that really, really annoyed me. this is a movie that is trying to appeal to western audiences and it succeeds at that. weirdly, as a turkish woman who has lived in turkey her entire life, i'm not the target audience. these people aren't real! the characters are caricatures, even the dialects they use are nonexistent! the terms they use are laughable, i watch the scenes and think to myself: "WHO would talk like this?" a turkish person who was born and raised in someplace else, probably. (and this applies to almost ALL actors, from the older ones to the younger ones except for the bad guy.) even the place they live, it's so hard to pinpoint just WHERE in turkey that may be. it's hard to understand the girls' turkish sometimes because they aren't fluent in it. so... how will the turkish audience connect with this movie? the director doesn't seem to care.it's festival bait and it's for western audiences, showing them what they want to see. i'm not saying this is not turkey's reality, it definitely is. it's just that the movie lacks emotion and sincerity while showing that.
