Ilya, the free-spirited, feminist, theatre and music loving, polyglot sex worker, was a hero of mine and still is.Honestly, so ahead of its time with its time portraying (and ridiculing) the frustrating absurdity of mansplaining. And its anti-capitalist themes! Even rejecting the thoughts of misogynistic old men and highlighting that one doesn’t need school to get an education. (Ex. Ilya speaks five languages)! To use Homer’s favourite adjective, Melina Mercouri is extraordinary! Ilya is one of the greatest characters to ever grace the screen. She’s a freelancer, doing what she loves to do, enjoying life. She doesn’t need saving, because she’s not a Greek tragedy. Inspiring.
