I so desperately wanna live on that broom
2014 Oscar Animated Short NomineeAs a Dad, I used to love reading my son storybooks at bedtime. There’s a particular age, usually between one and six, that all parents know. This is the magic hour stage. The stage where you can see your young son or daughters eyes glow with rapture as you read the words on the page. They want to hear the same story again and again night after night. For me and my son, it was a smorgasbord of Jez Alborough’s Teddy books, innumerable stories by Robert Munch, but, particularly Mortimer and I’ll Love You Forever, and my personal favourite Margaret Wise Brown’s classic Goodnight Moon. By the time my son was six, I could recite Goodnight Moon from memory. So could he.I could tell watching Room on the Broom that it was just such a children’s book. One of those special ones that were reserved for that special period. There is a structure of repetition that makes those young minds smile and giggle, and parents remember the verse forevermore. In a way, these types of stories are too easy. They have a built in audience in those who know the original work. All you really have to do is attract recognizable voice talent and utilize competent visual artists.I’m of two minds about transforming these stories into short films. Such a thing was done a couple of years ago with The Gruffalo. Both The Gruffalo and this year’s Room on the Broom are wonderful realizations of what presumably are classic children’s books. I just don’t know how they fit in the real world. At best, they are remembrances for parents and grown children of the time they spent together at bedtime. At worst, they’re a TV replacement for those times.Room on the Broom is touching, and it’s star power fueled voices perfect for their roles. I enjoyed it completely, but I fear the idea of it substituting for the irreplaceable bond created by reading to your young one.
