just a beautiful restoration by Muscle Distribution and a great way to end my time at Fantastic Fest. this movie so fucking funny and the aesthetic is soooooo stylized and lo fi in all the ways that make brain and my heart feel electric. just a great story about the struggle to tap into darkness when you’re writing and doing this crazy thing called filmmaking.love you fantastic fest 2026. thnx for having me.
Mixing together aesthetic elements of both 1920’s horror à la Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Val Lewton-esque shadowplay, Screamplay is the only film made by its artist/director and lead actor Rufus B. Seder, and honestly it’s a fascinating delight. A black and white Hollywood moving picture show murder jam complete with a wide eyed screenwriter, sleazy hotel, witty gore deaths, pie cutters, garbage disposals, a crushed light bulb mixed into to chop meat, bubble baths, and weed smoking L.A. fever dreams. I kinda fell inlove with this all over again and I’m very happy it exists. Not your typical Troma jam, but perhaps my favorite title released under that moniker.
Don't let this being distributed by Troma fool you. Rufus Butler Seder is a student of Slavko Vorkapić, his favorite film is Un Chien Andalou, and here he’s clearly inspired by German Expressionism and Lewton/Tourneur light and shadow play. The other key ingredient is the unique presence of George Kuchar, because everything he does is so specific of his singular personality. So this feels a bit like Thundercrack! without the explicit sex, and with some sort of silly meta-slasher instead of gothic horror as the starting point for the camp upgrade. Incredible imagination and energy, and although perhaps the reliance on rear projections, cardboard sets and double exposures is somewhat necessitated by the shoestring budget, it adds a certain, for me very enjoyable, fetishistic quality in relation to early cinema.
