If loving this travesty is wrong, I don't wanna be right!A defiantly, utterly, unclassifiably bizarre movie ("one-of-a-kind" simply doesn't do it justice), SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND stars Peter Frampton (!) and the Bee-Gees (!!) as the titular band, in a rather creative narrative that involves them gaining riches and being corrupted by fame (only to, of course, realize the error of their ways) while simultaneously embarking on a quest to retrieve magical musical instruments from villains played by Steve Martin, Alice Cooper, and Aerosmith (!!!), all of whom (and many more) are granted their own surreal musical numbers. This has a reputation of being one of the worst movies ever made, and while I can see how it's gained that reputation, I simply enjoy the hell out of it. I don't even think it's that bad, so much as just plain out-there. In other words, it's undeniably misconceived (who had this crazy idea in the first place?) but in execution becomes something strangely enjoyable. The endless stream of vaguely disco-fied covers of Beatles songs that carry the story are actually pretty good for the most part, and as a huge Beatles fan I still enjoy singing along to them. Likewise, most of the musical numbers have genuinely creative choreography and elaborate sets. There is truly always something to catch your eye in this movie.Frampton and the Bee-Gees don't really act (I'm struggling to remember a single line of "dialogue" that isn't sung) but their enthusiasm and naivete is downright charming. Some of the Gibbs' facial expressions are priceless. I also find Sandy Farina (as a character named Strawberry Fields - and there are also characters named Mr. Kite, Billy Shears, Mean Mr. Mustard and so on) to be really engaging. She has a beautiful voice and lends some genuine soul to "Here Comes the Sun" and especially "Strawberry Fields Forever."So, am I wrong for loving this movie? I don't think so. It's eye-catching, surreal, innocent dumb fun with a cavalcade of great songs. And when a floating Billy Preston shows up at the end shooting lightning from his fingertips, it's honestly one of my favorite crazy happy endings ever. Get back, Loretta!
