Zombieland for depressed people who enjoy poppin benzos and watching westerns.

This is a really unexpectedly good film. When it first became available on Netflix I wasn’t even remotely interested based on the cover and description because the whole post-apocalyptic zombie/vampire/whatever thing is getting pretty worn out, but this one does a really good job.I think the main thing that keeps me from rating it higher is that it’s a kind of a downer. I know that’s intentional, but like damn. Still, I’m gonna check out the sequel possibly today since it’s my day off and rainy and kinda chilly so I want to enjoy this taste of fall by watching horror movies until I pass out.
Pick Your Poison Challenge 2025Day 12: The End of the World as we Know it 💣There have been many stunningly good horror films out there, and despite the re-vamped bloodsucker fad continuing to suck the life out of the genre, inventive spins on the mythos still thrive. Just take a gander at Stake Land. Combining the bleak, post-apocalyptic vibe of The Road with a solid and visceral vampire hunter tale, this ferocious and artistic vampire film cuts deep with great direction, a compelling story, and a more than capable cast.Martin (Connor Paolo) becomes an orphan when his family is slaughtered by a vampire — one of many infected by a new disease that is wiping out most of the world’s population. By chance, he is saved by a grisly vampire hunter known only as Mister (Nick Damici), and the lone wolf takes him under his wing. The two begin a long trek north to Canada, evading religious zealots and vampires while passing through survivor towns on their way to a supposed safe haven known as New Eden. The premise is epic, but Stake Land narrows its focus to the nuances and subtleties of its characters to drive the message and story home. The balance between the often epic and visually creative storytelling and the well-crafted character work highlights this film as an artistic and devastating vision of a possible future. Martin and Mister's story is one of heartbreaking sacrifices and fleeting hopes, as we follow them and come to both love and hate the world they inhabit. The two leads are the heart of the film, brought vividly to life by stunningly well-acted moments, a superbly written script, and the insightful eye of director Jim Mickle. The film delivers scares at all the right moments, unafraid to portray the horrors of the vampire scourge with visual efficiency — one scene, in which a vampire drops a drained, bloody baby, made all the more disturbing by incredibly well-executed special effects, is enough to make anyone squeamish. At the same time, it layers in thoughtful human horror: the terrifying religious zealots and their devotion to God's wrath are just as disturbing as the inhuman bloodsuckers, creating a tension that is perfectly matched by the film’s writing. All of this is painted with a dramatic post-apocalyptic touch that creates a very real world for these intriguing ideas and characters to thrive in. Mickle does a damned fine job balancing it all and still comes out on top, even when the film starts to fizzle toward its final moments. He brings a sharp edge to the story that captures the brutality of its sorrow, yet manages to do so in a way that ensures the audience never loses hope for our struggling group of survivors — even with the film's very limited dialogue. It’s effective enough that when any one of them bites the dust, it's genuinely devastating to our psyche. Many vampire films have focused on humanizing the creatures, but Stake Land does its best to create a world where the morality of the monster is irrelevant. They’re here, and people simply deal with it. In a way, it's refreshing, inventive, and surprisingly realistic in how the main characters cope with their existence. This is what makes Stake Land the visually stunning and deeply written tale that it is.
