Fellas, if she really loves you, she’ll agree to a double feature with Abel Gance’s Napoleon
I almost want to watch The Saragossa Manuscript before I think about this, or at least read up on Polish history, because it's set in the same time period as Saragossa, and it seems like a sober version of that, with all the magic realism leached out. What's left is... evocative period trappings and a sprawling look at all the wars that Poland fought for other countries' benefit during the free-for-all of Napoleonic expansion. Is Wajda hinting that all that warmongering was an instrument that helped spread ideas about democratic governance across Europe? Does it have any particular theses at all? Or is Wajda just making a big-canvas big movie, like an arthouse version of one of those Lieutenant Flashman books, or a black and white Zhivago? Strong set-pieces, weak story-telling, characterization.
