A staggering, monolithic achievement of anti-cinema. Maybe the most “not a movie” movie ever made.The Devil Ant is not a movie in any traditional sense, but a backyard avant-garde mixed-media collage of lo-fi insect terror. As intriguing and mesmerizing as it is baffling and mind-melting. It feels like an endurance test designed to gauge how long a person can sit and watch a grown man growl, throw a rubber ant toy at unsuspecting “actors”, stuff his face and talk to himself on the phone before giving in to frustration, exhaustion or both. With any trace of logic or narrative cohesion out the window, it could almost be mistaken as intentional experimentation. But this is the cinematic world of David “The Rock” Nelson. A simple setup of spilled radioactive waste birthing monstrous mutation gives way to 136 minutes of chaotic SOV drone. What little story it possesses dissolving into monotonous madness. It’s abundantly clear this is accidental analog abstract art. This home-movie epic is first and foremost the stream-of-consciousness video-diary ramblings of a monstah movie obsessed mind. That’s precisely why the world of David “The Rock” Nelson is so beautiful.
