Die Studenten Jim Morrison und Ray Manzarek gründen am Strand von Venice die Rockgruppe The Doors. Nach skandalumwitterten Auftritten gelingt den Doors im "Summer of Love" der Durchbruch. Der todessehnsüchtige Morrison steigert sich in Alkohol- und Drogenexzesse und hat - trotz seiner Bindung an Pamela - unzählige Frauengeschichten. Der körperliche Raubbau beeinträchtigt die Qualität der Musik. Als Morrison bei einem Konzert in Florida 1969 angeblich die Hosen runterläßt, sind die Doors bereits ausgebrannt. Fett und aufgeschwemmt verläßt Morrison die Band, um in Paris auf den Spuren Beaudelaires zu wandeln. Im Juli 1971 findet man Morrison 27jährig tot in seinem Hotel.
