Familie Hunter nennt drei Haustiere ihr Eigen, die in enger Freundschaft miteinander verbunden sind: die Bullterrierhündin Bodga, den Labrador Retriever Luath und den Siamkater Tao. Weil das Familienoberhaupt, Professor James Hunter, von einer europäischen Universität zu Gastvorlesungen eingeladen worden ist und daher mit seiner Familie einige Monate in der Fremde verbringen wird, kommen die Haustiere vorübergehend in Pflege zu Tochter Elizabeth’ Patenonkel John Longridge in Kanada. Als dieser zu einer Jagd ein paar Tage seine Farm verlassen hat, beschließen die vom Heimweh geplagten Gasttiere, in ihre Heimat zurückzukehren. Die Reise führt sie dabei mehrere hundert Kilometer nach Westen, quer durch die kanadischen Wälder. Weil sie aber als Haustiere in freier Wildbahn weder Verteidigung noch Nahrungssuche gewohnt sind, haben sie zahlreiche Gefahren zu überstehen.

As a kid you're like "look at the cat in the water, I hope it lives, and it did, hooray". As an adult you're like "they just threw a cat into some rapids, and it looks like it is going to drown, and they probably had five other cats to take its place if it did, people suck".
Three pets, a Bull Terrier, a Golden Retriever, and a Siamese cat are left with a relative while the family travels for a job. After watching a flock of geese flying west the animals decide to do the same and take an incredible journey 250 miles through to wilderness in hopes of returning home.A few days ago I chose Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey to be my 700th review. I like all of my centennial reviews to be special films that have a chance of being granted that elusive five star rating, and that film is one that I've seen many dozens of times while growing up. I love it. It was while I was writing that review that I discovered its a remake of The Incredible Journey , a 1963 film about three pets trying to make their way home alone through perilous circumstances. Unlike in Homeward Bound the Golden Retriever is the young pup and the terrier is the older dog. The cat is a boy and none of them talk. Instead there is a narrator who delivers the story while the animals silently go through their routine. There's less time dedicated to presenting emotional attachment between the family and it's pets and the comedy is almost non-existent. The plot suffers from the absence of that human attachment and it's apparent during the final scene where the tear ducts just aren't stimulated. We are not shown the love between these two children and the pets, as the humans serve as mere cardboard cutouts with a voice. Lifeless and dull.The animals have stupid names (Luath, Bodger and Tao) but are incredibly well trained. I can't help but suspect some of them must have been harmed during filming. There's just too many risky scenes. It's the 1960s, animal cruelty laws are a lot more lax and I can't see how they filmed scenes like the cat in the river or being pawed by the Lynx without serious injury or death. I'm side-eyeing the notion that no animals were hurt during filming and I always will. The Incredible Journey is ok, and could very well have been impressive in it's time, but I find trouble writing a few sentences without being drawn to comparison with it's far superior remake. I guess that says a lot. The scenery and camera shots are gorgeous but the plot is hollow and lags more than it entertains. While this film may not be all that impressive it set a foundation for thirty years later and the brilliant 1993 film that kept the spirit alive while perfecting everything else. If you skip this and watch that remake you'll get the gist of the story and have a much better time.
