There is no surface on Earth that Elliott Gould can't use to light a match.

Wieder zuhause wird er von der Polizei als vermeintlicher Fluchthelfer verhaftet, denn Lennox soll seine Frau ermordet haben. There is no surface on Earth that Elliott Gould can't use to light a match.
Maybe the calmest thriller ever made, so when the ending comes it's like a thunder clap on a quiet evening. That isn't to say it doesn't get the blood pumping with a coke bottle moment that may be the most shocking thing since Cagney's grapefruit, with an undertone of menace, violence, and mystery - it's just that it saunters along on skinny legs for two hours, a slow burning cigarette, a rumpled suit. Gould's Marlowe is nothing short of incredible, a role that makes it seem as if he just popped out of the womb dressed and ready to go for this film. He doesn't pay attention to topless women or money not because he's too cool but because he's too calm. He makes being a smartassed loser look like the coolest thing you can possibly do. It's easy to be handsome, put on a suit and play James Bond, but to scoop cat food out of a can with your bare hands and still spark desire in the hearts of everyone who watches this film is ART. The touches of melancholy (beach walk reflected in the window, this meager search for a cat) are just...I can't handle it. I could cry. Double feature this with M.A.S.H. and I might go into a coma.I avoided seeing this for years because it's made up of things I like...everyone loves it, but what if I hated it?I'm an idiot.
few movies have pulled off “guy talking to himself” this well
