Action! - Three Auteurs: The Witty and Eclectic Mr. WilderNow, this is what I am talking about. This romantic comedy, Billy Wilder's second feature picture, features a discouraged Ginger Rogers, who, after failing to make it in the big city, returns home to find that the cost of transportation has increased significantly. But when she figures out she can get away with paying considerably less if she appears to be a minor, she dresses the part and passes herself off as a girl of twelve. However, as this is a screwball comedy, when fleeing from officers on the train, she runs across this officer who, to her "good fortune," believes she is a little girl. How? God knows! And this sets up a chain reaction of absurd and comical events.Without a shadow of a doubt, the banter and snappy dialogue and gags are what make this comedy so engaging and hilarious. They're silly, sure, but the movie has a sophisticated air about it. Of course, it's more realistic than many films in its genre, setting aside everything about how everyone believes her age (maybe it all takes place in the Riverdale or 80s teen movie universe?). Ginger Rogers is hilarious, showcasing her talents as a comedienne who can offer both the absurd and a fun time. Ray Milland is great as the straight man; he's such a charm. The rest of the cast does a fine job, too.All in all, one of those great comedies that definitely seem to have gone under the radar and deserve a lot of appreciation.TODAY SCHEDULEMy Years of DicksCobra VerdeNinja IIBad SeedThe Major and the Minor
