cw: rape culture, t-slur, d*ke slur, incoherent anger::: this is my 5-minute highschool Claire never got to be a real riot grrl but i was still listening to Bikini Kill ALL DAY scream rant :::i loved this and also i felt The Rage. it just feels so good. finally. to have let myself LIKE things that for whatever reason i have been told are bad. and doesn't it just make you furious how often BAD = FOR GIRLS? "girl movies" are punk as fuck. girl music is the punkest thing on earth. girls are made to be ashamed of femininity. part of me is just not at all interested in how "good" a movie is anymore by standard definitions? especially when there is like a documented trust gap that means women tend to get less directorial opportunities and way less distribution and that standards of "quality" are directly impacted/decided by the material hierarchy that distributes resources to creators. women who make indie films get 2/3 LESS screen distribution!and this isn't even beginning to take other axes, like race, sexuality, etc., into account and how film has been less available to certain groups in the past. like i don't even care at all if this is "worse" than De Palma, because if i had watched this when i was like 13 i would have been madly in love with Emily Bergl as Rachel with her kickin rad soft goth aesthetic and also she would have been my total hero and i would have wanted to be her with like every fiber of my being. and this would have been devil's fuel to young Claire up to this very moment. like and just hearing her say, "i'm a dyke," woulda been like the coolest, punkest fucking thing ever to hear even if she didn't really mean it. and i probably would have remembered that until i finally could start spewing motormouth girlstuff like i do now in torrents now because i held it in for a thousand years and even though this could have been gayer, i love Rachel's friendship with her goth friend Lisa & that they have matching tattoos and a cute friendship ritual they do whenever they see each other.and like this entire movie is just about rape culture, and like its portrayal of rapist jock dudes is like sort of a caricature but like ONLY SLIGHTLY. not in a world where rich white boys literally get off with no punishment for the crimes they commit that destroy women or that black people get literally killed for (Brock Turner, et al). it's like a heightened vivified version of what it feels like to be afraid of men because you've heard shit too many times like them talking so loudly about whether they'd "fuck a tranny" in your earshot when you're just trying to fucking get chinese food and they literally have nothing to fear and they can feel like the world belongs to them to take from and dispose of, or like idk one of your country's presidential candidates is a literal serial sexual assaulter.and like this movie tries to force Rachel into some compulsory heterosexuality that she sorta goes for but then his friends totally ruin it and even though he wasn't a totally horrible human, he was totally participating in that same culture up until immediately before and so it ends with like:oops, you spent all of your life unquestioningly going along with your sexist friends casual use, disposal, and rape of women and even though you finally realized this one woman is an actual human with feelings, it doesn't and will never undo all the pain you caused. now you get to live with that forever.and then Rachel burns down all the gyms and white kid mansions on the earth because of totally legitimate, unmitigated fucking rage.also this movie had ska in it and they talk about how much they love the band Garbage and people hacky sack in giant raver pants like i used to have & i love every last thing about.CARRIE & RACHEL FOREVERGO TELL YOUR FUCKIN FRIENDS!!!
She calls for her mother. She's all alone.Abandoned, bleeding, dying, heartbroken. The subtle commentary of this moment - how patriarchy drives women to hurt each other when we are most vulnerable - is incisive and agonizing as she calls for her mother, all alone, abandoned, bleeding, dying, heartbroken. She deserved so much better, and the film leaves no doubt in the heart of the viewer of this. It doesn't let you think she's a monster. It doesn't let you think she's an object. She's a wounded child, manipulated, abused, betrayed, destroyed by a system that lets women and girls be eaten alive. She suffers at the hands of cruel boys who were taught by cruel men that they could get away with anything - and they do - and the women around them all suffer for it, too. But Rachel fights back, in flame and blood, and she is rejected by her own mother for it. Her strength is seen by the patriarchy who has poisoned her mother as demonic, and she is abandoned. The heartbreaking part is how accurate this is to the experiences of so many. Would I prefer a film where she unites with the other manipulated, abused, betrayed, destroyed women and wins against the cruel boys? Yes. But this rings horrifyingly true, and her rage has its satisfactions up until it doesn't. What a gloriously bloody feminist horror film.
