I thought I had seen this before but hadn’t. It was a amusing horror comedy directed by Roger Corman. Written by one of my favorite writers Richard Matheson ! Staring Vincent Price, Peter Lorre, Boris Karloff and Jack Nicholson shot back to back on the same set of The Terror. I loved the set design. Some might not like because it is very comical but I thought it was fun. If you haven’t seen it check it out!
This movie is (apart from its cast) cheap and deeply silly, and it embraces both with such pride that the result is an unadulterated delight. It's so funny and so ridiculous that it's just utterly winning, and a complete pleasure to watch. It admittedly took me at least 50% longer to watch than it should have, but that wasn't because I was bored or distracted — no no, I just had to rewind basically every Vincent Price scene, so that I could admire his line delivery and wonderful expressions all over again. (He's the greatest. Have I mentioned before that he's the greatest? Also, no movie has made me sadder that I just never got to just, like, hang out with him and listen to him talk. Yes, my regrets about things over which I had no control are many.)Away from Price, Peter Lorre is his most plaintively Lorre-est here, particularly when he gets turned into a raven, Boris Karloff is perfection (though it's terrible sad to see how comparatively mobile he is here, compared to The Comedy of Terrors, which started shooting only about 10 months later), and Jack Nicholson's lowkey hamminess as the son of Lorre's magician character is the stuff of his Joker's nightmares of subtlety. (In addition to a billion Price scenes, I also had the rewind the one of Nicholson in the background as his character tries without hope of success to calm his drunken father down.)Many, many thanks to David for recommending these 86 minutes of pure joy.
Milk? How vomitable!I guess the original poem didn't include a scene in which Vincent Price sits in a chandelier while throwing eggs at Boris Karloff, but it should have.
