Pascal, ein kleiner Junge in Paris, findet eines Morgens auf den Treppen von Montmartre einen großen roten Luftballon, der an einem Laternenpfahl festgebunden ist. Pascal nimmt ihn mit nach Hause und von nun an weicht der Ballon nicht mehr von seiner Seite, wartet sogar auf ihn vor der Schule oder vor der Kirche. Das höchst eigenwillige Verhalten des Ballons bringt Pascal in viele heikle Situationen; andererseits ist er auch froh, einen so treuen Spielgefährten gefunden zu haben. Allerdings weckt das auch den Neid der anderen Jungen in der Nachbarschaft. Als eines Tages der rote Ballon von einer Steinschleuder getroffen wird, reißen sich plötzlich alle Luftballons der Stadt von ihren Besitzern los, fliegen zu dem Jungen und tragen ihn über die Dächer von Paris hinweg in den blauen Himmel.
