He was a distinctive American character actor active in the mid-20th century, known for his raspy voice and memorable supporting roles in Hollywood cinema.
He is primarily recognized for his portrayal of Stanislaus 'Animal' Kuzawa in Billy Wilder's Stalag 17, for which he received an Academy Award nomination, as well as appearances in The Seven Year Itch and The Man with the Golden Arm.
He specialized in tough-guy, comedic, and character parts, often playing bartenders, drivers, or soldiers in classic Hollywood films from the 1950s and 1960s.
