Hindol Deb

Deeply rooted in Indian classical music, sitarist Hindol Deb explores the infinite possibilities in the crossover of Indian music with genres such as contemporary Western classical, jazz, and Nordic folk. A recipient of the State and National Scholarship for Sitar, Hindol has been invited for music residencies by Recollets, Rikskonzerter, the Academy of Carnegie Hall, and the Goethe Institute. He is one of the few musicians with strong Indian classical training who also completed Master’s studies in Jazz. Hindol began learning the Sitar at age five from his father, Sri Panchanan Sardar, and trained under Pandit Santosh Banerji (Rampur Gharana) and Pandit Deepak Chaudhury (Maihar Gharana). His exposure to Dhrupad and Veena techniques further shaped his unique style. He has collaborated with renowned artists like Marina Abramovic, Renaud Garcia Fons, Markus Stockhausen, Georgis Xilouris. Alongside several Indian classical solo albums, his debut crossover jazz album Essence of Duality (2021) and the Nordic fusion album Northlight showcase his versatility. He is also part of Markus Stockhausen’s Septet Eternal Voyage, released by Sony Music. Hindol collaborated with the WDR Funkhaus Orchestra performing 'Ceremony of Innocence' composed by Filip Sijanec and his latest project, SAMHITA – Sitar meets Jazz Ensemble, features 14 musicians, creating a unique fusion rarely heard in contemporary music.
