Joe Harvey-Whyte is one of the most innovative and exciting pedal steel players around. He has worked with a diverse range of artists including: James Vincent McMorrow, Aldous Harding, The Magic Numbers , Susanne Sundfør , Josephine Foster, Billy Bragg , Tony Visconti , Nilüfer Yanya , Liam Gallagher & John Squire, Bullion , Mozart Estate, & many more. Aside from his work as a session musician, Joe is also a multidisciplinary artist working at the cross section between ambient/experimental music, visual art and environmental sound. His solo work combines the sound of the pedal steel guitar with electronics and field recordings to make works that create a space for deep listening & reflection. Since May 2025 Joe released 3 new collaborative albums: 'Langeleik' sees two pioneers of alternative pedal-steel meet across oceans, time, and temperament. Norwegian multi-instrumentalist Geir Sundstøl and Joe Harvey-Whyte merge the instrument’s ghostly resonance with field recordings, ambient drones and vintage synths to create a sound that feels as fluid and alive as the rivers that inspired it. ‘in a fugue state’ with tape loop sound scientist Paul Cousins is a time-bending tsunami of half-speed, fuzzed out drones".
