Underground καλλιτέχνης jazz pop
May Kolta is a London-based alt-pop folk and jazz musician inspired by classic hooks and world music. Her sound is a marriage of nostalgic instrumentation and modern production techniques with catchy melodies, powerful bass lines, and grooving rhythms. Evocative lyrics delve into difficult topics by romanticising her vulnerable personal experiences to connect to listeners. She draws from her heritage (South African, Egyptian and English), and her childhood in Cape Town to inspire themes of warm, oceanic imagery. By day, May works as a sound engineer, producer and session musician. She has worked at studios including Abbey Road and RAK. Using her technical skills to realise her sonic visions, she is making a name for herself. Her debut EP was self-engineered, produced and mixed. Her sophomore EP is in development for release at the end of the year. It is a concept project that uses food as a metaphor to explore the emotional journey from abusive relationships to rediscovering healthy love.
