Mieko Shimizu

Mieko Shimizu is a boundary-pushing Japanese artist — singer, songwriter, composer, and producer — based in London. Known for her fearless fusion of glitchy electronica, symphonic textures and avant-pop/experimental vocals, Mieko has carved a truly singular path through experimental and contemporary music scenes across Japan, Europe and the UK. She made her UK debut as Apache 61 with Mick Karn (Japan) on Haruomi Hosono’s Daisy World label, quickly gaining attention for high-voltage live sets from Sonar to Meltdown, supporting Massive Attack and sharing bills with Kraftwerk, Riz MC and more. Her collaborators span Nitin Sawhney, the London Symphony Orchestra, David Cunningham (The Flying Lizards), Robert Lippok (To Rococo Rot), and Stephen Mallinder (Cabaret Voltaire). She has remixed seminal acts including Coldcut and Yellow Magic Orchestra. A former Emerging Artist in Residence at Southbank Centre, Mieko has scored works for Phoenix Dance Theatre, the Royal Opera House, and worked with the London Philharmonic Orchestra on original compositions. Her acclaimed albums My Tentacles and I Bloom (feat. William D Drake of The Cardiacs) explore the intimate and the cosmic with lyrical intensity and electronic elegance. 2025 sees the release of her new EP Breathe Out and a headline performance at the inaugural Soho Electronic festival, following her recent EP Phenomena of the Mind and appearances with experimental collective Wonky Plonky Electronk.
