Queer καλλιτέχνης indie rock
New York–based musician Margaret Sohn - aka Miss Grit (they/she) - is a fearless experimentalist known for sculptural textures that blur analogue and digital, guitar and synth. Their acclaimed 2023 debut Follow the Cyborg imagined a futuristic, non-human search for liberation beyond gender and genre binaries. On its follow-up, however, Sohn powers down the android and turns inward. Under My Umbrella reveals the Korean-American artist’s internal world, tracing anxiety, heartbreak, and self-reckoning from the past two years. Referencing Rihanna’s iconic song, the title reflects Sohn’s decision to be more transparent: “I’m leaving the cyborg behind - I’m letting it all out.” The result is an album that’s expansive yet intimate, drawing from noirish trip-hop, dream-pop haze, and maximalist electronic swells. The album took shape after an intense solo tour across North America, an experience Sohn describes as both frightening and liberating. Back home in Queens, they sought to capture the raw, unrestrained energy of their live performances. Much of the album was recorded instinctively - first-take guitars and vocals, minimal editing - preserving immediacy and emotional truth. Ultimately, Under My Umbrella is about coming to terms with oneself - imperfections, contradictions, and all. It marks a bold new chapter for Miss Grit, defined by honesty, confidence, and a deeper connection to their own voice.
Miss Grit combines experimental electronic with stirring guitars, drawing from indie rock, art pop, and dream pop, often exploring themes of self and identity. Her acclaimed debut album Follow the Cyborg was released on Mute Records.
