In 2011 Tico Pierhagen started his Colombian Jazz, Funk and Cumbía quintet. The title of the first album of the band is named after a Colombian Rhythm: “Aguabajo”, which literal means falling water. Just like water, music flows and is moved by the rhythm. Tico is Born in Colombia and raised in Holland. Holland is the country which is constructed under the sea level so the name “Tico y Aguabajo” was obvious :-) With his music he creates the connection between his two worlds where he has grown up. His desire to compose innovative music and to create his own sound remains his source of inspiration. When he in 2008 meets the Colombian composer Juancho Valencia, his musical world is complete and for the first time in his life he feels the urge and ready to record an album with Colombian musicians. By combining the European music with the Colombian Cumbía he has inherited from his homeland, he creates a new type of music: Catchy melodies, embraced by colorful harmonies, led by powerful South American rhythms. The challenge of his musical arrangements are: to produce the largest possible sound with a relatively small band. Virtuoso piano parts accompanied by a strong Rhythm section with on top, changeling melodies performed by trombone and saxophone. Line_up: Tico Pierhagen – Piano Enrique Firpi - Drums Dave Breidenbach - Bass Efraim Trujillo - Sax Frans Cornelissen - Trombone
Tico y Aguabajo plays an innovative blend of Colombian cumbia, folklore, and Latin jazz rooted in energetic piano-led grooves.
