Underground καλλιτέχνης shoegaze
Toothpaste channel longing and apathy into a sound that feels intimate and unflinching. Love, boredom and yearning sit at the core of their sound, where restlessness and daily dramas meet with disarming honesty. Hints of shadowed romanticism, driving post-punk energy and melodic melancholy sit closer to the surface, revealing a band evolving and unafraid of growth. Collaborations with Simon Scott and mixer Ruby Smith helped refine their foundations, but late 2025 marked a decisive chapter. Holed up in Brighton, the band developed new material with Kim Jarvis, embracing a more direct approach: tighter arrangements, sharper hooks and a self-assured sound. Toothpaste have built a reputation for intense shows, becoming one of London’s most compelling live acts. From headline shows to supports alongside Slowdive, Swervedriver, BDRMM, Sunnbrella and Froth, the band have proven their ability to command rooms. Their presence remains tied to the city’s DIY community, on relentless billings across town alongside the likes of Ain’t, Sadplanet and Heavy Wild. A joint UK tour in October ’24 with Cheerless broadened their reach beyond the capital, and a Paris show with Fin del Mundo at the iconic Supersonic hinted at growing international momentum, though the band remain focused on steady artistic growth. 2026 will see a refined direction, with releases that trade haze for clarity and reveal a sharper songwriting edge — a band growing into themselves sonically and on stage.
Toothpaste plays a blend of shoegaze, jangle pop, and post-punk, characterized by melodic melancholy and driving energy, as heard on releases like 'Sucker'.
